Moving in Dubai in Summer: Protect Your Belongings and Crew
Summer in Dubai runs from roughly May to September, and many of us still have to move during it. Tenancies end when they end, jobs start when they start, and the school year begins in late August whatever the weather.
You can move safely in summer. It just takes more planning than a move in January. Heat affects your belongings, the people carrying them and the timing of the day itself. This guide covers all three.
What heat does to your belongings
Outdoor temperatures in Dubai regularly pass 40°C in the summer months, and the inside of an unventilated vehicle in direct sun can get much hotter. Most household items cope with a short, well-managed move. Some do not.
Items most at risk
| Item | What can happen | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Laptops, phones, cameras, hard drives | Battery stress, overheating, data loss | Carry with you in an air-conditioned car |
| TVs and monitors | Screen and electronics damage; condensation when moved between hot and cold air | Pack in original box or padded carton; let them reach room temperature before switching on |
| Candles, wax melts | Soften, melt, stain other items | Pack upright in a sealed box; do not leave in a parked car |
| Cosmetics, perfumes, creams | Separation, spoilage, leaks | Seal lids, bag them and carry the expensive ones with you |
| Wine and spirits | Wine can spoil; corks can push out | Move in your car or ask for climate-sensitive handling; keep bottles on their side in a wine carton |
| Medication | Some loses effectiveness above its storage temperature | Check the label; carry all medication with you |
| Vinyl records | Warping | Pack vertically and tightly, never flat; keep out of sun |
| Photographs and documents | Prints can stick together; adhesives fail | Store flat in folders, keep in your car |
| Wooden furniture | Rapid temperature and humidity swings can stress joints, veneers and finishes | Wrap properly, keep in closed truck, avoid long waits outdoors |
| Food and pantry items | Chocolate melts, opened items spoil | Use up or give away before the move |
Electronics need time to adjust
When you move a TV or computer from an air-conditioned flat, through hot and humid outdoor air, into another cool flat, moisture can form inside. Leave large electronics boxed or unplugged for a while after unloading so they reach room temperature before you switch them on.
Fridges and freezers
Empty and defrost your fridge-freezer the day before the move, and dry it out fully to prevent mould and smells. After the move, let it stand upright before switching it on. Check the manual for how long.
Closed vs open trucks
Open pick-ups are common for small jobs in Dubai, and in summer they are a bad idea for anything more than a few boxes. In an open truck your belongings are exposed to direct sun and dust for the whole trip, and to any traffic delays along the way.
A closed truck keeps the load out of direct sunlight, protects against dust and sand, and keeps everything strapped in one secured space. It is not air-conditioned storage, so short travel time and a quick turnaround still matter.
RM Movers uses its own closed trucks on every move, which is one reason our house movers can handle full apartment and villa moves through the summer.
Plan the day around the heat
Start early
The best summer moves start loading early in the morning. The air is cooler, roads are quieter, and the crew have energy for the heaviest lifting. By the time the sun is at full strength, the bulk of the outdoor work should be done.
Know the midday work ban
The UAE’s Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation enforces a midday break every summer. From 15 June to 15 September, work under direct sunlight and in open-air spaces is not allowed between 12:30pm and 3pm. 2026 is the 22nd consecutive year of the rule.
For your move, this means:
- Loading at the street, carrying furniture across open car parks and work on open balconies have to pause in those hours.
- Indoor work can continue, such as packing, wrapping, dismantling and assembling furniture inside the home.
- A well-planned move puts outdoor work before 12:30pm and after 3pm.
If a company offers to carry on loading in the open sun at 1pm in July, that tells you how it treats its staff, and probably your belongings too.
Book lifts and loading bays in advance
The worst summer delay is a loaded truck sitting in a car park because the service lift is booked by someone else. Reserve service lifts and loading bays in writing at both buildings, and confirm the times the day before.
Looking after your crew
Moving furniture in summer is physically hard work. Treat the crew with the same care you would want, and the move will go better.
- Water. Professional movers bring their own, but cold water and a cool room to take breaks in are always appreciated.
- Shade. Park the truck in shade where possible and keep the time spent walking in direct sun short.
- Regular breaks. Short, frequent pauses are safer and more productive than pushing through.
- Watch for heat stress. Dizziness, confusion, heavy sweating that suddenly stops, or nausea all mean someone needs to stop, cool down and drink water.
- Keep the AC on at both ends. If you can, have power and air-conditioning running in the new home before the crew arrives.
At RM Movers, our crews are trained in-house and work to schedules that respect the midday break and the conditions on the day.
Get the new home ready before you move in
Service the AC
AC units in an empty flat or villa may have sat unused for weeks, collecting dust in filters and ducts. Moving into a hot home with a struggling system is miserable, and dirty units can spread dust and musty smells into everything you have just unpacked.
Book AC cleaning for the new home a day or two before move day. A cleaned and serviced system cools faster and runs more efficiently.
Connect utilities early
Make sure power and water are connected before move day. In Dubai that means your Ejari and DEWA move-in being processed in time. Turning up to a hot, dark flat with a loaded truck outside is avoidable.
Clean before the furniture arrives
It is much easier to deep clean an empty home than one full of boxes. If you are booking a clean for the new place, schedule it before the move.
Packing tips specific to summer
- Use good-quality tape. Cheap tape loses grip in heat and humidity.
- Avoid plastic-wrapping wooden furniture directly for long periods. Trapped moisture can mark finishes. Use blankets first, then wrap.
- Label heat-sensitive boxes clearly so they are loaded last and unloaded first.
- Keep an essentials bag in your car: medication, documents, chargers, water, snacks.
- Don’t pack candles or aerosols with clothing or books. If they melt or leak, they ruin everything around them.
If there is a gap between homes
Summer moves often clash with travel. Many residents leave the UAE for part of July and August, and a tenancy may end while you are away or before the new place is ready.
Do not leave your belongings in a parked truck, a car boot or an unventilated garage for days at a time. Covered, managed storage is much safer for furniture, electronics and anything heat-sensitive. Before you agree, ask how the storage space is protected from heat and dust, and how items are wrapped and inventoried.
If you are travelling, give a trusted friend or the moving company written authority to handle the building handover. Agree in advance who will sign the inventory at each end.
Is summer actually a good time to move?
It can be. Demand patterns in Dubai do not exactly follow the weather, and summer can be quieter than the cooler months, which may mean more flexibility on dates. We look at this in more detail in our guide to the best time to move in Dubai.

Frequently asked questions
Is it a bad idea to move in Dubai in July or August?
Not if it is planned properly. Summer moves work well with an early start, a closed truck, sensible packing of heat-sensitive items and a crew that takes regular breaks. Summer can also be quieter than the cooler months, which may make it easier to get your preferred date.
Can movers work during the midday break?
Outdoor work under direct sunlight is banned from 12:30pm to 3pm between 15 June and 15 September each year. Loading and carrying in the open has to pause during those hours, so a good mover schedules outdoor work for the morning and later afternoon and keeps indoor tasks such as packing and assembly for the middle of the day.
Should I move my plants in the moving truck in summer?
Short moves in a closed truck are usually fine if plants are loaded last and unloaded first. For longer moves or delicate plants, carrying them in your own air-conditioned car is safer. Water them the day before rather than on the day, so pots are not dripping.
How long should I wait before switching on my fridge after the move?
A common recommendation is to let a fridge stand upright for a few hours before switching it on, so the oil in the compressor settles. Check your manufacturer's manual, as some models give a specific time.
Do I need to service the AC before moving into a new flat?
It is strongly recommended in summer. Units in an empty flat may have been off or neglected for weeks, and a clean, serviced system cools faster, uses less power and avoids the musty smell from dirty filters and ducts.
